Everybody wants to have the trouble free vision that they had when they were children. Lasik eye surgery promises to make that a reality for a growing number of people. Many wear glasses and contacts, but the number of those unfortunates is diminishing rapidly because of the perfections of the surgery. Using concentrated beams of photons, doctors are able to reshape the eye so that it has the acuity that it once did.
Although one would think that there would be some amount of trepidation because of the manner of correction, it seems that it is not a problem for the people having the procedure.
A day is set for the procedure and the person who is to have the surgery is taken into a regular doctor’s office and stretched out in a dentist’s type chair. They are made comfortable, the area is neutralized with a small amount of anesthetic and then they have the out patient operation right there.
There is no more to the procedure than that. It is over very rapidly because time is money, and then you just have to get that follow up scheduled.
There may be some things that could go wrong in the interim so the doctor needs to check and make sure that the lasik eye surgery has allowed your eyes to stay as good as they were when you left the office. After a very rapid examination you are on your way.
The one issue that many people have had with the surgery is that it may be painful. The procedure itself is actually painless even though the lasers are used.
If you want you can have the pictures after the doctor is finished and you have gone back for your follow up visit. Your eyes are spread wide to accept the instruments that the doctor’s use for the procedure, and most people have a very surprised look on their faces because you can see the laser coming, but you eyes are immobile. They are great to show to people you know.
With every new invention or procedure of any type there are time constraints that have to be observed before adequate data can be collected to tell what effectiveness that operation has. For lasik eye surgery being that it is a very new invention, there are not the amount of cases needed to give accurate results as of yet. When those cases are gathered doctors will then be able to tell their patients, with some degree of accuracy, what the chances of failing sight is and how long they can expect to keep their new eyesight.
Some people are also still worried about the cost. Since it is still considered an elective surgery by most insurance groups, you will have to foot the bill by yourself. The procedure is relatively inexpensive compared to other surgeries and hospital stays, but it can still set you back several thousand dollars.
Cost could be a prohibitive factor, but not that much usually. The fact that a person cannot see without aids is a lot worse.
Most of the time lasik eye surgery will not deter people from getting the procedure done. There may be some associated issues, but they are relatively minor compared to the hoped for benefits.
